Following election reform in the state of Georgia, Major League Baseball has decided to re-locate its annual All-Star Game from Atlanta, Georgia at the encouragement of President Joe Biden, who deemed the voter laws “Jim Crow on steroids.”
“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a Friday statement, according to ESPN. “I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.”
This decision comes days after President Biden called upon the MLB to boycott the city to send a message to the state.
“I think today’s professional athletes are acting incredibly responsibly. I would strongly support them [moving the all-star game out of Atlanta],” Biden told ESPN’s Sage Steele during a Wednesday interview. “People look to them. They’re leaders.”
“Look at what’s happened with the NBA, as well. Look what’s happened across the board. The very people who are victimized the most are the people who are the leaders in these various sports, and it’s just not right,” Biden continued. “This is Jim Crow on steroids what they’re doing in Georgia and 40 other states.”
The bill, signed into law last month by Gov. Brian Kemp, would require statewide voter ID to vote, both in-person and through absentee ballots, lengthens voting hours in some locations, and prohibits bribes, such common tactics like water bottles or snacks, while voters wait in line. In their 98-page examination of the bill, the New York Times admitted the new laws “are unlikely to significantly affect turnout or Democratic chances” and could even “increase turnout.”
Frankly, however, the only true victims of this decision are the fans and small businesses of Atlanta, as the hometown Braves put it.
“The Atlanta Braves are deeply disappointed by the decision of Major League Baseball to move its’ (sic) 2021 All Star Game,” the Braves organization said.”This was neither our decision, nor our recommendation and we are saddened that fans will not be able to see this event in our city. The Braves organization will continue to stress the importance of equal voting opportunities and we had hoped our city could use this event as a platform to enhance the discussion. Our city has always been known as a uniter in divided times and we will miss the opportunity to address issues that are important to our community.”
“Unfortunately, businesses, employees, and fans in Georgia are the victims of this decision,” the Braves added. “We will continue to support the community legacy projects which have been planned and are in the process.”
Former President Donald Trump also weighed in on their decision, slamming the league for caving to the “Radical Left.”
“Baseball is already losing tremendous numbers of fans, and now they leave Atlanta with their All-Star Game because they are afraid of the Radical Left Democrats who do not want voter I.D., which is desperately needed, to have anything to do with our elections,” Trump said in a statement. “Boycott baseball and all of the woke companies that are interfering with Free and Fair Elections. Are you listening Coke, Delta, and all!”
Though the MLB will boycott a state over voter ID laws, the league has made increasing their presence in China, a nation in the midst of committing genocide, a priority. The league has signed numerous television deals in China to broadcast games and recently expanded their streaming deals to reach a wider audience. Apparently, countless human atrocities won’t vioalate the league’s values but requiring voter ID does.
