In an interview last night with Newsmax host Greg Kelly, President Trump spoke about a possible 2024 presidential bid, though he wouldn’t say whether or not he would run. This is exciting news for his supporters. Because the Senate acquitted the former president of inciting an insurrection, Trump is still free to hold political office, something which he is fairly obviously considering, meaning he could become the second ever President to hold the office twice non-consecutively, the other being Grover Cleveland.
At the beginning of the interview, the former president spoke about his recently deceased friend and supporter Rush Limbaugh, who Trump awarded with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented to Limbaugh by First Lady Melania Trump. He spoke fondly about Limbaugh, saying ‘we lost a really great gentleman today.’
About a potential run in 2024, Trump said, “Well, we have tremendous support. I won’t say yet, but we have tremendous support.” Recent polling suggests that Trump’s approval rating has increased since his acquittal, something which he referenced in the interview. “I’m looking at poll numbers that are through the roof,” he said. Recent polls showed that he was still most Republicans’ candidate of choice for 2024.
In another display of support for the former President, his fans gathered in palm Beach, Florida, to show support for him after the impeachment trial. Trump said that “It grew out of nothing, and it was thousands and thousands of people. There’s tremendous love and tremendous spirit in this country.”
Trump referenced the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, saying that it was still strong. “The whole MAGA movement, call it MAGA, call it whatever you want, call it America First as opposed to America last,” he said. MAGA, originally Trump’s campaign slogan back in 2016, has now come to mean so much to Trump’s followers. They see it as a statement that power resides in the people, not in corrupt career politicians, and they also see it as a reminder that patriotism, no matter how the left tries to demean it, is never a bad thing.
Interestingly, Trump also spoke about how he had ‘really wanted to be somewhere quiet’ after he had left office, but that ‘It hasn’t been that quiet’. For someone like Trump, who is well known for speaking his mind, being quiet would have been difficult to do, and his supporters are almost certainly grateful that he is still giving interviews and still motivating his followers. One such piece of motivation came in the former president’s post-acquittal statement. Trump said:
“Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it!”
