Texas Lawmaker Introduces Bill To Secede From The U.S.

Texas state legislator Rep. Kyle Biedermann, marched at the Capitol on Jan 6 says that Washington D.C. is broken so Texas would need to break away and secede. Biedermann introduced the “Texas Independence Referendum Act,” on Tuesday, which is a formal bill that would have Texas secede from the United States.

“Voters of all political persuasions in Texas can agree on one thing, Washington D.C. is and has been broken,” Biedermann stated. “For decades, the promises of America and our individual liberties have been eroding. It is now time that the People of Texas are allowed the right to decide their own future.”

“Texas is seen as the bastion of freedom and a leader of free enterprise, which has built a robust economy, financial solvency and capacity for massive energy production worthy of the world stage,” he stated. “These are all indications that the Republic of Texas would not just survive but thrive as an independent nation. Now is the time for Texas to lead.”

If House Bill 1359 ends up passing, Texas voters wouldn’t be deciding to secede immediately. Texas would end up having to figure out how they can secede from the United States within the next five years, and what steps they would have to take.

It will be unlikely for Texas to be legally allowed to secede. In 2016, Professor Eric McDaniel of the University of Texas in Austin told the Texas Tribune that after the American Civil War, the federal government ensured that the states could never secede from the rest of the country without permission.
