January 20, 2021 marked President Trump’s final few hours as the President of the United States. Though his term came to a close around 12 p.m., his day was still busy. From pardons to flights, President Trump had a lot going on.
President Trump announced well before President Biden’s inauguration that he would not be in attendance. He kept his promise and left Washington, D.C. hours prior to the inauguration ceremonies. He took Marine One for the final time to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Trump gave some final remarks to those at the base. He then got on Air Force One to head to Florida (Shapiro).
Some honest quotes came from President Trump throughout the day. “Hopefully it’s not a long-term goodbye. We will see each other again” and “I will always fight for you. I will be watching, I will be listening and I will tell you the future of the country has never been better” (ABC).
Aside from his departure, President Trump also gave out a plethora of pardons on his final day. One of the pardons went to popular rapper Lil Wayne, who recently pleaded guilty to a gun possession charge. Another popular rapper, Kodak Black, received a commutation (CNN).
President Trump also left a note to now President Biden, a tradition among presidents. Biden has not yet shared the contents of the letter saying “”The President wrote a very generous letter. Because it was private, I will not talk about it until I talk to him, but it was generous.” Apparently, President Trump was very moved by President Obama’s letter to him and seems to have wanted to keep the tradition going (CNN).
President Trump has been pretty quiet on his future plans. The beginning of life after the Oval Office will begin at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, however (Jackson).
